EAIS TRANSITION

EAIS was established in 2011, and since then it has been successfully fulfilling its mission to promote, encourage, and support the independent academic study of Israel across Europe and beyond. It has been supporting multi-disciplinary, academic perspectives on Israel. By bringing an Annual Conference which is its flagship initiative to European Universities (in Munich, Cagliari, Wroclaw, Prague and London) is has deepened the understanding of Israel and the region within the European academic community. A lot of efforts have been made to support early career scholars and to consolidate the community of European academics who are researching contemporary Israel. It was also very important to facilitate exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas between European based scholars and the global academia.

The growing EAIS network helps scholars build new contacts, improve the quality of their academic output, and find new job opportunities. All this strengthens the field of Israel Studies across Europe and beyond.

WHY POLAND AND JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY

The decision about transition from the UK to Poland has been driven  by several factors, among many others one can mention the fact that the Israel Studies have been gaining momentum in the Central-Eastern Europe (CEE). Furthermore we hope the registration of the organization in one of the European member state, will act as an incentive for further development.

We are happy to announced that the EAIS will be hosted by the The Jagiellonian University one of the oldest and important academic center in the CEEwhat we believe will enhance the European integration in the academic sphere and thus strengthen the European Israel Studies in general.

The Jagiellonian University is the oldest higher education institution in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded on 12 May 1364. Today, the Jagiellonian University (JU) comprises 16 Faculties, with more than 80 fields of study, about 48 thousand students and nearly 4 thousand academic teachers, the Jagiellonian University is one of the leading higher education centers in Central Europe.JU offers the full time study programs (BA, MA and PhD) in English https://welcome.uj.edu.pl/programmes

JU is a place where IsraelStudies have been developed for many years. A leading role in initiating and running the research and education on contemporary Israel belongs to the Institute of the Middle and Far East. The Institute is home to the Department of Israel and Levant, with 6 permanent positions in Israel Studies.
